This website was created by Rose Barlow.
Rose was much loved and cherished by many people not only here in the Coulee Region, but all over the Upper Midwest - Wisconsin, Minnesota and Iowa. We have received e-mails from across the nation and from around the world, too. She is missed very much.
Rose died on Saturday, June 13, 2009, after an unexpected dance with cancer, diagnosed just a little over 3 and 1/2 months earlier. She was 46 years old. Her courage during her illness and passing was an inspiration to us all. Even now, she continues to teach us in many truely unexpected ways.
Rose had been an herbalist for over 20 years, practicing in the Wise Woman tradition. This is a tradition of healing through optimal nourishment using simple, safe herbs found in our own backyards, prepared by our own hands. She specialized in nutritive herbs, developing recipes for wild foods and integrating wild food into modern diet and lifestyle.
Studies show that people who eat wild foods are less likely to develop cancer, but there are no guarantees. Our modern industrial world is becoming more & more toxic every day and even our best individual efforts may not be enough unless we join hands and make a collective approach to change our current culture's habits, lifestyles and their devastating effects on all living things.
Rose was past director of the Coulee Region Herbal Institute (CRHI) in Southern Wisconsin, after founder Jessie Conaway. This website is now maintained by CRHI through donations of members & friends. The North Country Herbalist Guild (NCHG) in Minneapolis, Minnesota generously donated the fees to keep this website up from August 2009 to August 2010. THANK YOU!
Rose did such a outstanding job as director of CRHI, we needed to divide up her duties between 4 people. Current Co-Directors are Carol Jacobs and Lora Krall (both of Winona, MN), assisted by Jess Krueger, (Viroqua, WI) and Carol Willis (Wesby, WI).
